    Reporting to the Director of Global Technical Accounting, the Senior Manager of Accounting will ensure global compliance with US GAAP standards and company accounting policies. This position will provide or lead staff on technical accounting guidance, resolving accounting issues on significant non-standard transactions, implement new accounting standards, and monitor existing accounting policies while driving best practice. The role will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining strong business partnerships and training programs across finance and global business units to promote teamwork and to be part of a center of excellence for global technical accounting.

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as an expert on U.S. GAAP and SEC technical accounting issues by proactively monitoring the development of new and emerging accounting and related reporting matters, independently assessing current and future implications, training & communicating with the businesses, countries and functional departments that are impacted, and managing relevant implementation plans.
    • Routinely provide technical accounting guidance and (and memos) related to complex transactions, revenue recognition, leases, new rule implementations, business combinations, acquisitions, divestitures and restructuring initiatives.
    • Collaborate with the NA, IO and Corporate Controller and regional/business finance staff on accounting questions, guidance, and implementation of new guidance and development of new accounting policies and procedures.
    • Work closely with GM Technical Accounting group to ensure alignment on accounting positions.
    • Supervise, coach and develop team personnel who assist with the completion of the groups responsibilities on a day to day basis.
    • Support the continuous review and update of accounting policies, as well as working closely with GMF personnel globally, in reviewing existing policies to determine those requiring update, clarification, expansion, or modification to better fit GMF’s environment.
    • Train appropriate personnel globally on new policies and changes to existing policies
    • Identify, research, timely resolve and communicate/train the business, region or functional departments on accounting-related questions in relation to business transactions, ventures, one-time unusual events;
    • Provide accounting assistance, as needed, to the external financial reporting group in their management of the consolidation of financial statements in accordance with a financial close and reporting schedule.
    • Undertake special projects and support Global Finance and Controllership initiatives, as needed.

    Qualifications

    Experience: 

    • Strong experience in U.S. GAAP and SEC technical accounting and analytical skills, including ability to research and conclude on complex issues when not covered in the existing rules and with a bias toward balancing accounting implications with business requirements
    • 6 years in public or company accounting 
    • Undergraduate degree in accounting – CPA/Equivalent required
      • MS in Accounting and masters preferred
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills, including excellent presentation skills and ability to support accounting conclusions with executive management in a layperson’s, business oriented context
    • Ability to work with a diverse group of people, within the Controller’s group and globally in-country – as well as at all levels (subordinates and superiors)
    • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and strong influencing skills

    Skills & Knowledge:

    • Experience with a multinational corporation working with multiple locations,
    • Capacity to anticipate and develop new processes while directing others to assist
    • Ability to provide guidance and feedback to staff-level team members
    • Experience in automotive finance preferred
    • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Oracle, etc.
